After impressing while on trial, Ashley, a talented left-arm quick bowler, signed a two-year deal at the start of the 2010 season. Thus far, his stay at Kent has proved frustrating and a series of injuries have halted the progress of a player who has already shown glimpses of his quality.
Plucked from playing club cricket in Cheshire, he made his t20 debut for the Spitfires during the 2010 campaign, against Middlesex Panthers, and took the new ball against the fearsome hitting of Australian legend Adam Gilchrist. Under immense pressure, he performed admirably that day and looked to be a great find but shin problems limited his participation for the remainder of that season and further injuries hampered him during 2011.
His first class debut came against Loughborough MCCU, in May 2011, but it was his first LV= County Championship appearance that really made people notice his talents, as he bowled skilfully to take 5-118 against Derbyshire.
Ashley has also shown ability with the bat, most noticeably when he hit the winning runs off the last over to see off Yorkshire in the CB40 last summer. If he stays injury-free then he could well play a major part in 2012.
