Kent’s leading spin bowler continues to be a key part of the county side and another good return in 2011 proves he is still one of the best slow bowlers on the county circuit.
James, who is Kent born and bred, has taken nearly 550 wickets for the county in all forms of the game since his debut in 2000. His turn, flight and guile make him a threat in all forms of the game. He has been particularly impressive in t20 cricket, where his economical spells have proved crucial to a successful Spitfires outfit.
His fine displays haven’t been lost on the national selectors either. After a golden summer in 2009, when he took 69 championship wickets, he deservedly got called up to the England side to tour Bangladesh. On debut he impressed, recording match figures of 6-181, to prove his value on the international stage. Since then he has been in and out of national side. However one remarkable performance came in his first World Cup appearance, in 2011, when he claimed man-of-the-match figures of 4-48 to dismantle the West Indies and force England through to the knock-out stages.
The all-rounder, who also has three first class centuries to his name, still harbours hopes of reclaiming an England spot but, in the meantime, Kent fans remain delighted to have him at close quarters. James is also involved in running coaching courses at the St Lawrence Ground, in conjunction with the Kent Academy.
